Seeing well after 50

Most of us notice it in our 40s: the menu gets harder to read. That's presbyopia, the normal age-related loss of close-up focus, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Get the exam first
The AAO recommends a baseline eye exam at 40, then a schedule your eye doctor sets, and an exam every one to two years from 65. An exam also checks for glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, which glasses don't fix.
Where to buy glasses online
Once you have a current prescription, these retailers sell prescription glasses online. Compare prices on their sites, since frames and lens options change often.
Readers vs. prescription
Drugstore readers can work for close-up tasks if both eyes are similar and you have no other prescription. If you already wear glasses, ask about progressives or a separate pair for reading.
